Member of Indian Parliament and Esteemed Actor

Raj Babar was born in Agra on June 23, 1952 and was educated in Agra, Patiala and Delhi. He takes pride in cultural and social environment of Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. He has also worked for various organizations in India and Abroad.

Babbar entered the world of art in 1969 by gaining admission to Punjabi University, Patiala and 1972 to the National School of Drama. He finished his theatre studies to start working as a freelancer; for nine years he worked with absolute dedication. His noted plays include Andha Yug, Yarana, Nadir Shah, Donton's Death, Suraj Ka Satvan Ghodha, Mrichhkatkam and Tughlaq.

In 1979 he came to Bombay and started his film career as a leading actor. He earned great acclaim from the press and won national awards for his work in such films as Insaaf Ka Tarazu, Prem Geet, Agar Tum Na Hote, Nikah, Bheegi Palken, Sansaar, Aaj Ki Aawaz, Andha Yudh, Karam Yoddha, Aitbaar, Jawaab, Aankhe, Corporate, Chann Pardesi (Punjabi), Umrao Jaan, Rudali, Long Da Lashkara (Punjabi), Ghayal, Mari Da Diva (Punjabi), Kalyug and Shaheed Udham Singh (Punjabi).

He has acted in more than over 200 films and won numerous awards in India and abroad for his excellent performances. He has inspired a whole generation of theater artists.

During his college days Babbar came under the influence of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia and his socialist views and became an active student leader. Later he was inspired by Comrade Syed Sajjad Zaheer, a renowned poet, strong nationalist and noted patriot.

He has been closely associated with organizations for the prevention of AIDS and drug addiction, assistance to the handicapped and mentally retarded, among various other social foundations. 

He was nominated as a Member of Parliament to the Rajya Sabha in 1994 from Uttar Pradesh by the Samajwadi Party. He was elected as a Member of Parliament to the Lok Sabha from the world famous home city of the Taj Mahal, 'Agra,' in 1999 and 2004 from the same constituency and again elected from Firozabad Bye-Election Lok Sabha.

He has formed a Pvt. Ltd Co. in the name of BABBAR FILMS (P) LTD. Under this he has produced two feature films in Hindi: Karmayodha and Kaash Aap Hamare Hote. Currently under production is a mega serial Maharaja Ranjit Singh; it will be telecast on Doordarshan soon.
