Dr. Sophie Hawkins - Professor of Religion

Dr Sophie Hawkins currently teaches as an adjunct professor in the Department of Religion at Hofstra University, but in past years has taught at the Open University in England, and at the Ontario College of Art and Design and the University of Toronto in Canada. She received her Ph.D. (The Magician’s Rhetoric: Or how India became a Magical Land) from Lancaster University in 2006. Her research has largely explored the complex interplay of religion and visual media, with a particular focus on South Asian public culture. Her interest in visual anthropology and art history has more recently led to the study of documentary film theory and criticism, and the place of religion in contemporary art. Dr Hawkins is also currently working with the Rubin Foundation, SAFF, and Hofstra students to establish an online archive of Sikh art.
